Great night at the Oscars and our sixth annual Oscar Party!

The show is over and The Hurt Locker was named Best Picture, sliding Avatar out of the way. Kathryn Bigelow, also became the first female director to win the Best Director award.

Jeff Bridges was named best actor for his role in Crazy Heart and Sandra Bullock was named best actress for The Blind Side…

I have posted a great link for the complete list of winners and the acceptance speeches below and you will also see some photos from our very exciting sheik and elegant Oscar Watch Party.

Thanks to Lansing Mall Cinema for hosting, Bake n Cakes, Applebee’s, El Azteco and Jersey Giant for supplying our deee licious buffet. Jim's Monday Shout Outs (2-15-2010)

What a weekend. I enjoyed another perfect show from The Williamston Theater on Friday. I hated a new movie (The Wolfman) on Saturday and adored the show at the Encore Theater in Dexter Sunday afternoon.

Check out my reviews and see just how good The Smell of the Kill is at Williamston, and what a cute musical “Putnam County Spelling Bee” is in Dexter. While I was in Williamston and Dexter, Jeffrey Van Camp went to Paw Paw for “One Acts.” His review is here.

Jeffrey Van Camp, who joins us from cinemasoldier.com, also wrote a review about a movie I took a pass on this weekend, “Valentine’s Day.”

Jim's Monday Shout Outs (2-07-2010)

What a super weekend. I enjoyed a trip to Owosso Friday night for Oklahoma.  The Community Players there did a fine job. Check out my review on the Theater page, and while you are there look at my review of Alegria: Cirque du Soleil. I caught the show Saturday night in Detroit. Its run at the Joe ended last night, but it will return to Michigan on March 31 for a five day run at The Breslin Center in East Lansing. You WILL want to see this one!

I also popped down to Adrian, where I caught the last show of “Fame.” Too bad that show only ran for one weekend. This was an effort from area high school students and it was a delight. We don’t review high school shows at MIentertainment. The young people get an automatic four out of Fordyce for their hard work, dedication, and for many, the experience of trying something new.

"Everbody's Fine" is ready for Oscar time

Rating:

I will say it loud and clear: this is the movie you don’t want to miss this year. Everybody’s Fine follows a widower, played by Robert DeNiro, who embarks on an impromptu road trip to visit his grown children after his wife passes away. This is the best movie I have seen in ages and it starts with DeNiro, who can act without even speaking. Just a look or a gesture and you will understand why he should get a boat load of awards, including best actor for DeNiro and Best Picture for this film. Drew Barrymore, Kate Beckinsale, and Sam Rockwell play his kids, who used to deal with Mom and have trouble relating to dad.

This film has good actors and acting, but the story is touching and sincere and we can all see our own families as we watch. The film work is also superb, with every shot carefully designed to convey the message the film is sending and very clever use of flashbacks that prove what we all know: parents never think of their children as being “grown-ups.” From generation to generation we all deal with that as a permanent bond with our parents that is a mixture of love and resentment.

If you haven’t figured it out already, this one gets the perfect four out of Fordyce. But if you go, bring your hankie. Grown men were crying when I saw the screening and they were movie critics who are known for not having emotions. And when you go, savor this movie as the rare treasure it is and the classic it will become.
