"The American" is not for most Americans

Rating: A Good 3 out of 4

The previews of The American would lead most people to believe this was a hard-hitting spy thriller full of car chases, political intrigue, and surprise plot twists. But what you actually get from director Anton Corbijn’s latest is a very quiet film, a study of an aging assassin named Jack (George Clooney), who begins to “lose his edge” as he yearns to leave loneliness behind him and find love and a place to settle down.

"Up in the Air" flies low

Although it is already getting Oscar buzz, I can’t see Up in the Air meriting any of the coveted statuettes.

Up in the Air stars Oscar winner George Clooney as Ryan Bingham, a corporate hatchet man who loves his life on the road but is forced to fight for his job when his company downsizes its travel budget.

The film follows Clooney’s character from hotel to hotel as he deals with his own shallow attitude and a lifestyle that most everyone is encouraging him to change. The film costars Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick. One is his coworker and one is his love interest with a secret. Jason Bateman is also in the film, and he was the weak link as once again he was playing Jason Bateman.

This one gets a good 3 out of Fordyce as an enjoyable film, but not award quality.
