« New "Sister" act is a holy new experience »

Rating:  4 out of Fordyce

A good Catholic cannot refuse to go to catechism class, so I obeyed once again and made the trip to the Gem Theatre in Detroit for the newest installment in the “Catechism” series. Just in time for the high holy days you can enjoy Nonie Newton-Breen as “Sister” in “Sister’s Easter Catechism: Will My Bunny Go to Heaven?

Nonie Newton-Breen as “Sister”This time, Sister answers timeworn questions of the season like, “Who was Mary Magdalene?” “Why isn’t Easter on the same day every year like Christmas?” “Will My Bunny Go To Heaven?” and more.

This was my third “class” in the last few months. There was Christmas Catechism in December and Late Night Catechism 3 last month.

We had Sister Mary (Zentmyer) for those classes. This time Ms. Newton Breen is our teacher. She is wonderfully delightful as she helps us unravel the many mysteries of the Church with a big smile. She has a different teaching style then our last sister: A touch more laid back and a little more matter of fact.  She is a delight to watch, and of course there is always class participation. We had questions to answer, questions to ask, and a few quizzes in the form of on stage game shows. Your show may be different than our Saturday matinee, because like all the Catechism shows, Sister plays off the audience. Our class was made up of mostly girls, since I suspect the boys were watching basketball. We did have some girls who sister had to cover up more modestly, and a few needed some discipline from Sister.

These shows are more fun if you are Catholic, but we had Lutherans and Presbyterians among us, too, which just added to the fun. This show gets a perfect 4 out of Fordyce from this less-than-perfect Catholic boy. Grab a friend and go have some fun. If your friend is not Catholic then think of the fun you will have on the way home trying to explain what transubstantiation means.

The show runs through April 17, 2011. Call the Gem Theatre box office at 313-963-9800 for tickets or drop by www.gemtheatre.com.

Head for the Photo album to see some pics of me with Sister, and below is my interview with her.
