« “Sonia Flew” is high flying drama »
Rating:
3 out of Fordyce
Sonia Flew is the lastest offering from Perfromance Network Theater in Ann Arbor. This is a dramatic play that takes place in two acts in two separate time periods.
It begins as Sonia learns of her son’s decision to enlist in the military and fight in Afghanistan following 9/11. As he goes off to war, her memories of being forced to leave Cuba when Castro took power overwhelm her.
This play begins with the cast playing a blended 21st century family celebrating Hanukkah and Christmas. The first act sets us up for the second as we watch an adult Sonia have difficulties with her relationship with her family. The cast plays this act very well. John Bennett, Christina Flynn, and Russ Schwartz work well with each other, and Milicia Govich is great as Sonia, while Will David Young is perfect as the grandfather.
The second act takes place in Cuba, with Sarab Kamoo playing Sonia’s mother. She holds this act together. Flynn plays young Sonia and Young plays her father, but both are much more convincing in their roles in the first act.
The script skips around a little, so pay close attention and enjoy this show, which gets a very good three out of Fordyce.
