« "Sorcerer’s Apprentice" is just plain fun »

3 Out of Fordyce
Here is a fresh movie that is fun and doesn’t take itself too seriously. I just loved The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. This Disney pic stars Nicolas Cage as master sorcerer Balthazar Blake, who is defending the world from his arch-nemesis, Maxim Horvath (Alfred Molina).
For centuries Balthazar has been looking for the one who has the blood of Merlin within him and can defeat Morgana, the sorceress who killed Merlin over a thousand years ago. He finds him in modern day Manhattan, the home of reluctant nerd Dave Stutler (Jay Baruchel). This geeky physics student gets a crash course in the art and science of magic. Together, the unlikely partners work to stop the forces of darkness as Maxim tries to set Morgana free from her magical prison in a plot to raise an army of the undead that will destroy humanity.
The plot is cute but a little predictable. Cage is great in this one and the rest of the cast fits perfectly, especially Baruchel. The pair are amusing and likable as the teacher/student, big brother/little brother relationship develops. Add in the pretty girlfriend (Teresa Palmer) who distracts Dave from his important training, an off-the-wall American Idol-like sorcerer (Toby Kebbell), and great special effects and you have a film that gets a fun three out of Fordyce.
