« "Southern Comforts" is an amazing show »

Rating:
4 out of Fordyce (Perfect)
I missed opening night and had to schedule a “make up show” to review Southern Comforts at Tipping Point Theatre in Northville.
I did that Sunday afternoon and was impressed with what you can do with a good script, a good director, and a good cast. Southern Comforts is about a widow and widower who have a chance meeting and find life doesn’t end because you are older.
This play, written by Kathleen Clark, was handed over to director Joe Albright, who did one amazing job at bringing this show to life. Someone at TP was brilliant enough to get Ruth Crawford and Thomas Mahard to play Amada and Gus. From the moment these two take the stage you love ‘em. They are the best elderly couple since Fonda and Hepburn headed to Golden Pond. Crawford has the drive of Hepburn with the softness of Meryl Streep and she just nails this role. Mahard is everyone’s curmudgeonly grandpa, dad, uncle, or neighbor, and he is just right to make you nod your head and smile as you enjoy his performance. The pair is so good on stage you won’t want to leave them when the show comes to a close with a beautiful ending that may draw a tear from your eye.
I had Auntie Joan with me for this one and she loved it, but was quick to point out that while this play may seem like it is aimed at an older, female audience, everyone will enjoy this one. She is right.
I will give this one the Perfect 4 out of Fordyce and remind you that shows at Tipping Point tend to sell out, so call the box office and get your seat before they are all gone.
