« "Little Shop of Horrors" is anything but a horror »

Rating:  3 out of Fordyce

I was in Ann Arbor on Sunday for the matinee of Little Shop of Horrors. This show is a cute, fun story with a clever plot and some great tunes that have delighted audiences for years. In this new production, the folks at The Performance Network Theater found some clever ways to spice up the show.

While I won’t spoil the surprise, I will say it is a long standing point of pride among people who perform this play to come up with new and clever ways to animate the plant. PNT excelled at that and the cast and crew also threw in a surprise for the audience that I had never seen done in the many times I have attended this show.

Outstanding in the cast is Jason Richards as Seymour. He does his job well, as does Courtney Myers as Audrey. The singing trio was good, but I thought they were a bit weak in the opening number. Aaron Moore plays the sadistic dentist and several other parts. There was nothing to distinguish him between his portrayal of the dentist and the other characters. A wig might have been a nice touch.

All in all this is a fun two hours of theater and I give it a good 3 out of Fordyce. Little Shop runs through May 9.
