« Opal’s Husband is light entertaining silliness »

3 out of Fordyce
She’s Baaaaaackkkk … Jane Zussman is reprising her role as the simple-minded yet wise Opal Kronke. This time the show is Opal’s Husband, another tale from the houses on the outskirts of the city dump. This go ‘round, Opal wants to help Rosie find a husband, so she answers a newspaper ad for Mr. Handsome. The man who shows up is anything but, yet the 95-year-old captain Mooney is a charmer who needs some help from the girls.
As always with this series by John Patrick, things get going at a silly pace as the farce brings you to its cute conclusion. Jane is marvelous as Opal. It is worth a ticket just to listen to her chat with the audience from right in the middle of the play. Jan Ross was fine as the Captain’s daughter and Dan Pappas was good as her dolt of a husband. Mark Zussman (Jane’s real life hubby) ages to become the captain, and he is amusing in his role; you will also adore 85-year-old Winifred Olds as Rosie.
This show is not a masterpiece, or even thought-provoking, but it is just plain down-home fun. Combined with a nice dinner and a room full of fun folks, and this one gets a good three out of Fordyce. Make your reservations now, though. Opal’s Husband only runs through March 20 and Starlight Shows sell out fast. Go to http://www.starlightdinnertheatre.info/ to have Linda save your seats.
