« “Blue Door” opens to reveal a perfect performance »
Rating:
4 out of Fordyce
Blue Door is the season opener at Williamston Theatre, and it is another example of the determination and drive this theatre troupe has to keep its audiences coming back for more. To be honest, I did not think this script was going to be my cup of tea. It is heavy drama with a social message, but it was peppered with some light moments and two actors that left me spellbound.
It is the story of an African American math professor whose white wife wants a divorce. As he deals with what may be a night of insomnia or just a dream, three generations of men from his family, from slavery through Black Power, arrive in front of him with a strong message about what makes him who he is.
The two-man cast makes this show. Rico Bruce Wade is Lewis. He relates his concerns and crisis to the audience in a manner that is both strong and sensitive. Julian Gant is marvelous as all of Lewis’s ancestors. He moves effortlessly from character to character with just a different hat and a different attitude.
The timing between these two actors is perfect as is their interaction with the audience. I must also point out another well-thought-out set from WT and perfect lighting, sound and effects.
Add in great direction from Suzi Regan and you have another hit from the Williamston Theatre that gets a perfect 4 out of Fordyce. Get your tickets now. The show runs until October 17.
