Summary

If you have sight, you have undoubtedly taken it for granted numerous times in your life. In fact, it’s probably more accurate to say that the number of times you’ve actually taken pause to become truly present and appreciative of your sight is not often. Whether you have sight or whether you are blind, this show is a must. Christine is joined in studio by Mary and Fred Wurtzel to discuss some of the issues that exist regarding blindness, recent legislation that impacts the blind within Michigan, and the upcoming convention of the National Federation of the Blind of Michigan. It’s a jam packed hour and you won’t want to miss a bit of it!

Fred and Mary are both blind, and as they were proud to report, are the successful parents of three sighted children, two of whom still live in Michigan. Both Fred and Mary are intimately involved with the issues of blindness in our state, but many of the attitudes and prejudices that exist today are actually within the sighted community. It’s an important discussion that everyone needs to hear.

We also discuss the recent budget cuts that impact the Newsline organization that provided, until 10/1/10 newspapers that are accessible to the blind in Michigan. We hear about budget cuts all the time, this segment of the show highlights the impact of those budget cuts on our citizens.

And ultimately we talk about the upcoming convention for the National Federation of the Blind, its relationship to the overall organization, and where we go from here.  Please join us for this fascinating hour!
