« “Dracula: A Rock Opera” has a good cast, bad music  »

Rating: 2 out of Fordyce

I was at the Meadowbrook Theatre in Rochester Hills for Dracula: A Rock Opera. This show is the classic story of the real “bat man” set to rock music.

Was it good? Yes. Technically, it was perfect. There was an imaginative set, great acting, sound, lights, special effects, even flying people. Billy Konsoer was very good as Dracula, as was the entire cast. When he is giving nocturnal hickeys, he is both scary and sexy. The women are alluring and the men become their characters.

Unfortunately, the music in this show left me colder than a zombie’s heart. The score is not at all memorable and the style is kind of in-your-face screaming. What should be dramatic comes off as Frankie Vali meats Phantom of the Opera. The lyrics repeat in many of the songs, and there is really no show-stopper in this score.

My hats off to the cast, who did the best they could with music that should have been left for dead. I will give this one a good two out of Fordyce and tell you it is worth seeing for the cast and the effects.
